What can keep a dream alive?

Before the car accident that changed everything, Samantha Becker was a happy and loved little girl. Ten years later, Sam, now 18, lives under a dark cloud—largely ignored by an alcoholic mother who never recovered from her loss and ruled by an overbearing father who blames Samantha for the family tragedy. And yet, the troubled teenager has a dream that keeps her going, and an extraordinary musical talent that could take her all the way to Julliard…and far beyond.

Following her heart, however, means defying her father, who has his own plans for his daughter’s future.  Then, in the wake of another devastating personal catastrophe, her dream is irreparably shattered, and in her pain and anger, Samantha acts out recklessly. But her salvation could come from a most unlikely trio: a handsome college student, a hopeful little boy…and an older neighbor woman whose caring and secrets will change Sam’s world forever.

A powerfully moving addition to the ranks of superior YA fiction, Better Than This by Tia Souders joins Rainbow Rowell’s Eleanor and Park, Jay Asher’s Thirteen Reasons Why, the novels of John Green, and other prime examples of contemporary teen literature.  Souders tells the heartbreaking, yet ultimately transcendent story of 18-year-old Samantha, whose remarkable musical abilities could be her escape from a family devastated by tragedy and steeped in guilt, sadness, and recrimination. But when a terrible accident seems to destroy her dreams for the future, Sam discovers a new path forward and new hope when she becomes involved with a remarkable young boy and his grandmother, a caring older neighbor who guards a secret that will change the troubled teenager’s life forever.

Excerpt

My mother crashed into the kitchen, knocking over the wine glasses nestled on the hutch. Mumbling something incomprehensible, along with accusations that someone rearranged the furniture, she stumbled and fell. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the raised knife poised again above the apple.

My father said I shifted my hand on the island, distracted by my mother. A totally plausible explanation—if it were true.

My eyes widened as I stared down at the halved fruit, now drenched in my blood. The pain came in startling, pulsing waves until my entire hand felt as though it was engulfed in flames.

My heart threatened to crash through my chest, as I struggled to comprehend what happened. I vaguely recalled screaming in the background. Where it came from, I’m still unsure. Possibly me, or my mother. I barely noticed my father’s panicked voice as it rang in my ears, nor did I feel it when he squeezed the dish towel over my hand.

I don’t recall moving. I don’t remember speaking or moaning in pain. All I remembered is the sight of the blood-stained cloth shifting, noting the missing finger, and thinking This is my fretting hand.

Torn 3: The Continued Story of an Undeserving Wallaby Drowning in a Septic Tank by Simon Williams Review

The third book in the Torn series by author Simon Williams takes readers on a humor filled and emotional roller coaster ride as he recounts his mission to reconnect with the son taken from him and the legal battle to finally be with him. Here’s the synopsis:

What is the only thing that could inspire someone to willingly walk through hell on earth? When we are prepared to die we stop apologizing for who we are, what we have done, and what we go through.

For Simon Williams, his bizarre journey through life found him looking over his balcony in his mid-forties contemplating the end. What happens next is a heartbreaking, gritty and remarkable tale told with sardonic wit, frank honesty, and a unique perspective on life as Simon struggles to rediscover the meaning of happiness.

The third book in an eye-opening series about what it means to savor every day of your existence and believe in yourself to overcome all odds. An inspirational story for anyone who faces tough times. After reading what this man goes through you will know what facing up to fear is and realize you have the power to do whatever it takes to tackle any issue in life head on.

This third book does an amazing job of showing the emotional struggle of a father wanting to have his son back in his life. Mixing this story with tales of his many adventures and life lessons while living in Los Angeles, the author does a wonderful job of blending his unique sense of humor with important life building moments that defined his struggle later in life to reunite with his son. For anyone who has been reading this series, this third book will have an ending. Whether or not it satisfies the reader is really up to you to find out, but I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s creative spin on the non-fiction genre and really appreciate the amount of care and honesty Simon Williams took to relay his struggles, from the mental and emotional toll it took on him as a father and the fight to maintain who he is as a person in the face of so much adversity.

Overall this was a great book in an informative and emotional non-fiction trilogy. This book will keep you on the edge of your emotional seats as you wait to see whether or not he can finally see his son, and open your eyes to the struggle of parental rights when it comes to two parents from different nations. If you haven’t yet be sure to pick up your copy of Torn 3 today!

Demonic Wildlife: A Fantastical Funny Adventure (Demonic Anthology Series #1)

Anthologies are great. They give readers a chance to enjoy the writing style and creative concepts of many different authors at once. Another thing
I enjoy a lot if the combination of two genres that one normally wouldn’t go together, and that’s what we get in the anthology series first foray,
Demonic Wildlife: A Fantastical Funny Adventure! Published by Battle Goddess Productions, this anthology tells the story of several horrific
animal encounters that blend demonic entities and furry and lovable creatures big and small. Some are hilarious in their delivery, while others
are terrifying to imagine, but they are all incredibly written. Here is the synopsis:

READERS BEWARE – You are about to set foot on a bizarre adventure, a funny fantastical one filled with demonic animals. The first few stories are light, more about the giggles, but be warned. As you read further, the dark creepy side will sneak up on you. Within this entertaining tome you will find spiders, snakes, sheep, wolves, manatees, hummingbirds, squirrels, and many more!

There were some truly wonderful reads in this anthology. I might be a little biased in one of my favorite stories, as the author is a good friend
of mine, but I loved Koalas by Maxine Grey. This was one of the more terrifying stories, as it showcases what might happen if normally calm and
friendly animals were to turn feral and attack humans at an Australian Zoo. The fast paced horror of the story really grabbed me and the imagery
was vivid and bone-chilling to say the least. One of my favorite stories that was more humorous than scary had to be that of CATagories for 500,
a hilarious story of a cat and his true identity as he must outwit a demonic presence threatening to attack his human companion. The delivery of
the story from author Clint Doyle and the hilarious competition the Cat undertakes against the lowly demon was fun to watch unfold on the pages
of this anthology.

Overall this was a phenomenal collection of stories. Filled with gory imagery, nonsensical humor and incredible wit, this was one of the smarter
anthology series I’ve read this year in the horror genre. I would love to see more anthologies in the future from Battle Goddess Productions in
the future, and if you guys haven’t yet I’d pick up your copy of this anthology today!

Macadamian Pliers by Steve Conoboy

A young girl scarred by tragedy finds herself in a battle for both her and her family’s survival against a ruthless enemy in the YA Paranormal
novel Macadamian Pliers by Steve Conoboy. Full of YA humor and drama and a chilling villain named Macadamian Pliers, this novel was a thrill to
read. Here is the synopsis:

Cherry’s heart crammed into her throat. She was alone with Mr. Pliers. Nobody to hide behind. She turned to see him filling the threshold of the room. He resembled a grotesque ill-fitting door carved into the shape of a black-suited golem. ‘The room,’ he clarified. ‘It’s the one I would have chosen. You have taste similar to mine. Lucky you.’ He turned and tilted so he could get into the room, an obsidian monolith with the power of movement. The top of his head brushed the ceiling. Suddenly the bedroom didn’t seem anywhere near big enough. ‘It’s the view, isn’t it?’ He chuckled then, a sound which made the ends of Cherry’s bones grind together. Phlegm and rust and sparks: these are the things she thought of when she heard that laugh. ‘I would gaze out of the window for hours, imagined I could pick up the little people as they went about their days and place them anywhere else if I wanted to. Drop them from a great height if it pleased me.’ He mimed the action with nimble pinching fingers, plucking a distant imaginary figure from a sidewalk and flinging them off towards the horizon. In Cherry’s mind there was a tiny scream. ‘I think you’re going to have quite a time in this house, Cherry. Don’t you?’

Macadamian Pliers is an unpleasant man with a hideous plan. He’s just sold a house to Emmet’s Peak’s newest family, and they’re about to find out it’s haunted. He made it that way.

In the first volume of a trilogy, Cherry and Frank Raine find themselves in a battle of wits and nerves against both the ghosts in their new home and the man who put them there. Cherry, physically and emotionally scarred by a car crash, must draw from within herself the strength to confront her fears and save her family. Frank must choose between taking responsibility for once or being led astray by firebug Jack, a local boy with a dark sense of fun. As the haunting escalates, Cherry discovers that other homes have been affected by the strange-shaped and evil-hearted Pliers, but what chance do a couple of kids have against such a man?

The story was so intriguing. From the first pages you know that Macadamian Pliers is going to be a force to be reckoned with. He kind of reminded
me of Leland Gaunt from Stephen King’s Needful Things, promising a vulnerable family the promise for great changes only to hide a much more
sinister plot from their purview. A macabre man with an unusual trade business, he slinks through the shadows and appears to most as the kindly
salesman with the promise of hope, but Cherry sees past his disguise and recognizes an unsettling presence has invaded her life.

The characters are the biggest stand out for me in this novel. Not only is Macadamian Pliers a bone-chilling character to read, but the struggle
to be heard and to be believed is something most of us can identify with at one point or another in our lives, and Cherry’s struggle to fit in
and not bullied is a story that tugs on the heartstrings. When you delve into her past and learn the tragedy that led her to this new home, you’ll
heart will crumble and you’ll find yourself rooting for her more and more as the pages go on. The imagery was vivid and the setting made me feel
as if I was reading the novelization of a teen horror film.

Overall this was a wonderful read. Full of suspense, drama and bone-headed humor one would expect to find from a much younger sibling, Macadamian
Pliers by Steve Conoboy is a hit YA novel that all YA fans should read. If you guys haven’t yet be sure to get your copy today!

I wanted to thank those who have shown an interest in my book thus far. It’s already garnered it’s first 5-star review, and it means the world to
me that you guys are responding to it. This book is the collection of my first novella series, featuring the novellas “I Was A Teenage Killer”,
“I Was A Teenage Zombie” and “I Was A Teenage Demon”. I have not only combined these novellas into a novel, but I have completely reworked the
original manuscripts, polishing the writing itself and adding some fun and more relevant plot twists that I think you guys will enjoy.

This story follows a beautiful young teenager named Lisa Etron. The small North Carolina town of Willow Springs sees Lisa as the perfect example
of high school success. She’s a cheerleader, an A+ student, and treats everyone with respect and kindness. After securing a date with her best
friend Dave, Lisa appears to be on top of the world. What Dave and the rest of the town fails to realize is that Lisa is hiding a dark secret. A
secret that is both terrifying and deadly, and threatens to consume the town in chaos once unleashed. Providing a new face for terror, the novel
features scares, chills and the ultimate fight between good and evil. Can evil wear a pretty face? Can love win over hate? Find out in I Was An
Evil Teenager: Remastered!

I hope you guys will enjoy this novel. It’s perfect for the Halloween season, and is a throwback to the young and inexperienced author I was
over seven years ago when I first published this series. For anyone with a blog or an interest in reading this book, I have free electronic copies
of the book available in .mobi, PDF and ePub formats. I can send you a copy in exchange for a fair and honest review, so send me an email to
authoranthonyavina@gmail.com and I’d love to work with you. Thanks for your support everyone, and look out for more giveaways and announcements
in the future!

Interview with Author John P. Kildemm

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. What inspired you to become a writer?

I was inspired to become a writer through comedy. I have been a standup comedian for over a decade and even as a kid, standup was one of the few professions that I could actually respect. Which, despite a fear of talking in front of people, allowed me to pursue standup comedy.

2) What was your biggest inspiration for writing this book?

The biggest inspiration for writing this book, Hey Doorman VIII, was the election of Donald Trump. Which if one reads the book will easily identify as the inspiration. As I saw, and continue to see, a lot Trump’s attributes (arrogance, thin-skinned, xenophobic, misogynistic etc.) in the intoxicated and not intoxicated patrons of the establishments I work at. The number two inspiration was having time in between other projects (and not being hired to write on a tv writing staff, but that’s a story for another day about being black in Hollywood).

3) What theme or message do you hope readers identify with when reading your book.

In all of my non-fiction titles, which Hey Doorman is, there is no overall message or theme, besides being entertaining and funny in my signature brand of comedy. Which is honest, simple and wrapped in a Tarantino/Palahniuk/Chappelle darkness. In my fiction titles, the overall message often follows one of my favorite lines (albeit modified) from the Matrix trilogy: “Everything that has a beginning has an end. I see the end coming. I see the darkness spreading. I see death. And there is nothing that stands in its way.”

4) What social media site has been the most helpful in gaining a readership?

I’m not sure there is a social media site that has been most helpful in me gaining readership. Each one that I’ve used in the past, Facebook and Twitter, have there own benefits. But neither seems to have outweighed the other. If anything, the best way to gain readership without a big financial push, is word of mouth. So in that way, Facebook and Twitter are about equal in my estimation. But I just joined Instagram, so we’ll see what happens there.

5) What advice would you give to anyone who wants to pursue a writing career or is a beginning author?

My biggest advice to aspiring authors, is the same advice that Too $hort gives to aspiring rappers: “Don’t stop rapping.” In other words keep writing.

6) Any future writing projects in the works?

I do have a few projects currently in the works, but the one which I am most proud of is my directorial debut titled: HUMOR. The short film will be released October 30th on Vimeo On Demand and is available now for pre-order. This is the film’s trailer: https://vimeo.com/ondemand/humorashortfilm

Can’t Buy Forever by Susan Laffoon Review

Love and fate go hand in hand in the romantic period drama Can’t Buy Forever by Susan Laffoon. A tale of romance, family feuds and unexplainable
power, this incredible story takes readers through the post World War II mid-west American setting to tell the story of two star crossed lovers
that must fight to be together. Here is the official synopsis:

In the early 1950s, Odessa Drake (Dessa) is rescued from a bleak existence with a single mother. She takes a chance on the unknown to work in a boarding house owned by a widowed great aunt in Mineville, New York. Dessa is devoted to Aunt Flo and especially a young man, Nicholas, who appears and takes shelter in the attic, the only available space. Four years pass. She looks forward to each day because of his presence, in spite of the tedious work. Dessa is now eighteen and knows little more of Nicholas than the day he arrived to work the mines. She knows only he is a remarkable man who has a limp and she trusts Nicholas explicitly. There is a familiarity both recognize and an unshakable bond develops. Nicholas has reasons to keep his past buried. Dangers loom and become evident when Nicholas gets too close and exposes their bond. What is the mystery behind this threat? To discover the answer, they escape by railway heading West, colliding with treachery and uncovering secrets, mile by mile. Their journey is impossible, but, they are supported by friends who risk their lives to make sure a great love and lineage is preserved. Or is it? None will forget their odyssey as they proceed to their destiny farther than they imagined.

The story of Odessa and Nicholas is a blend of Romeo and Juliet with a splash of the supernatural. The mystery behind Nicholas spans the entire
novel, with twists and turns that no one will see coming. The bond between these two lovers is both heartwarming and heartbreaking. Its a whirlwind
romance that takes the reader through a roller coaster of emotions.

The writing was fantastic, with a wonderful attention to detail that made me feel as if I were living in the early 1950s. I could almost feel
the biting cold of winter and smell the sawdust on the small farm Odessa lives in. The imagery of the Midwest setting was breathtakingly beautiful
in it’s description, and the emotions felt throughout the novel were evident in every page of every chapter. It’s a wonderful read that’s full of
heart that everyone should read, so if you haven’t yet please be sure to pick up your copy of Can’t Buy Forever by Susan Laffoon today!

HEY DOORMAN VIII: True Tales of an Uncommon Bouncer in Los Angeles by John P. Kildemm Review

A short yet action fueled memoir set in the post 2016 Election era defines the novel by author John P. Kildemm. Titled “HEY DOORMAN VIII: True
Tales of an Uncommon Bouncer in Los Angeles, this 36 page story takes readers through the life of an LA Bouncer, and the experiences he encounters
in a California city where Donald Trump has become President of the United States. Here is an official synopsis:

SEX — VIOLENCE — TRUMP Eight true tales from your wittiest bouncer’s, wittiest bouncer
Mister Kildemm chronicles the night life in the City of Angels as only he can, in the fourth installment of, Hey Doorman. But this time with a biting political edge working in cahoots with his always hilarious edge. That’s two edges people. TWO.

As Jerry Seinfeld once said, “I’m sure he’s having a good laugh over this with his doorman buddies.”

This short yet sweet read is fun yet mind-blowing, as the often overlooked job of a bouncer at a nightclub showcases the struggles one faces with
various patrons, from the would be robber to the wannabe NBA player. While I will say for younger readers that this is a very adult book, featuring
adult language and sexually explicit terminology, overall I think the book was well told and painted a vivid image in one’s head of these insane
situations. The use of pop culture references worked perfectly here, and the humor and wit used by the author is as lightning fast and entertaining
as the author himself.

Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book. While it wasn’t the lengthiest of stories, the tales that were told in this memoir are unlike anything I’d
read before and makes you appreciate the men and women who work in the service industry like that and put up with the reckless and chaotic behavior
of trouble causing patrons. It’s a chaos fueled world out there, and author John P. Kildemm has done a marvelous job of bringing that chaos to the
forefront with this novel. If you haven’t yet, be sure to pick up your copies of this book today!
