Just Before Dying, He Prayed For You by J. Traveler Pelton Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Author J. Traveler Pelton works to explore the final moments of Jesus Christ’s life before he was taken by the soldiers and betrayed by Judas in the book, “Just Before Dying, He Prayed For You”.

The Synopsis

The last hours of Christ on this earth were intense; this book looks at just a few minutes of that time. John the beloved records that while Jesus was in Gethsemane, He had struggled with God, won the battle of self; and as the soldiers and Judas were heading His way, He took time out of the little He had left to turn to God and pray for us, all down through the eons of time, from then until now, and asked God to stay with us, to protect us, to lead us. He commended us to God the Father. When He completed His prayer, the guards came, and the torture of His passion took His attention for the next 24 hours as He was judged, tried and killed. His last thoughts were on you. Walk with Him in the Garden, think on His last words for us, understand His love. Whether used for the 40 days of lent or another time of spiritual emphasis, these 41 chapters will change your life.

The Review

This was such a unique and interesting read. While I must confess I myself am not religious and did not approach the book from that perspective, I think Christian readers are going to absolutely love the book. The heartfelt story focuses on the last recorded prayer of Jesus to his father and highlights his deep connection to humanity.

For me, history was a huge draw for this narrative. The climate and social dynamics of the people not only within Jesus’s group of followers, but the government and citizens around them all were fascinating to see unfold, and the comparisons the author made to present-day issues were insightful to read.

The Verdict

A memorable, thought-provoking, and engaging read for Christian readers especially, author J. Traveler Pelton’s “Just Before Dying, He Prayed For You” is a rich and thoughtful read. While I couldn’t identify with the more religious aspects of the book, the history was rich and fascinating to see unfold, and the exploration of modern history in comparison is a brilliant read. Calm Instead of Clamor: How to Control the Natural Gift of Fear by J. Traveler Pelton Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A new path to overcoming anxiety takes center stage in author J. Traveler Pelton’s book, “Calm Instead of Clamor: How to Control the Natural Gift of Fear”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

In today’s world, people are frightened, anxiety is at an all-time high and lowering the stress of daily life can seem impossible. J. Traveler Pelton LISW-S, wrote Calm Instead of Clamor in order to try and stem the anxiety that seems endemic in our society. Today’s fear is rooted in many things, the present pandemic, the climate, the economy, family problems, past trauma, or spiritual despair. This book will show you a path, clear and simple, to get your anxiety under control. Using time-proven and clinically correct exercises, Traveler leads you step-by-step to a quieter, more fulfilling life. Your new life will feature less stress, more serenity, and joy instead of panic, clamor, and fear. Isn’t it time you did something to help yourself find quiet in your soul and mind? You are so worth it! Claim your calm!

The Review

The author does a good job here of striking a balance between psychology and Christian Science and beliefs. While many of you know I myself am not religious, I found the author’s candor and approach to be memorable and attainable from various angles and belief systems. While many Christians will feel a special connection to the author’s words, the nature of fear and how it impacts us all is felt in every chapter, and the author does a great job of exploring this from more than just her religious background.

This book did a wonderful job of implementing these calming techniques while tying it all into the real-world effect that COVID-19 has had on us all. The pandemic’s isolation and fear have amplified so many of our own personal fears that anxiety has never been more prevalent in our world. The author does a great job of not only acknowledging this but showcasing both personal, religious-based thinking with practical and helpful techniques that will help many dealing with their own anxieties.

The Verdict

A heartfelt, unique, and calming self-help style book that delves into the root of our fears and finds the means to calm ourselves, author J. Traveler Pelton’s “Calm Instead of Clamor: How to Control the Natural Gift of Fear” is a must-read. The author has a way of connecting with readers on a personal level and offers a wide variety of calming exercises that readers from all backgrounds will be able to implement. Interview with Author Shaheen Chishti

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I was born in Ajmer, Rajasthan, and saw at close quarters how women’s lives were in traditional
Hindu and Muslim cultures, having interacted with many families and seen many villages. I
came across many women’s issues, which moved me. I then moved to England at a young age
and saw the socially liberated society where they were making efforts to move up the chain, so
to speak. That being said, I noticed that both sides were suffering in different ways and came to realize that society has been unfair to our mothers, sisters, daughters and partners for
centuries. This set my mind up to write a book highlighting the issues faced by women from
various cultures and arguing for the advancement of women in all societies.

Advertisements

2) What inspired you to write your book?

I wanted to help young women find their voices and power, and to make the most for
themselves – not for their society. So many young women now are the living legacies of strong
women who came before them, able to live their lives and enjoy their freedoms and identities
because of the sacrifices made by their grandmothers.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

This book is written for anyone with daughters, granddaughters or young women in their lives,
who want the very best for them and all the daughters who follow. I have two beautiful
daughters of my own and want to make sure that they know that they are just as important as
anyone else – regardless of their gender, race, culture, religion or creed. We are all humans and
must support one another.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

I would hope that my daughters and future granddaughters get to live in a society that fully
respects women; a society in which they would not have to face the same injustices and lead
their lives in fear of what could happen to them just because of their gender. We have certainly
made progress as a society but there is still such a long way to go to ensure that all our
granddaughters live without fear of men and are not held back to reach their full potential.
Since my childhood, I read about the Bengal famine of 1943 which no one covered – or at least
not as much as I have done in this book. The Holocaust was something that I was aware of from
an early age in India. I think that I was six when I saw a documentary about Adolf Hitler and
then, as I grew up, I read about it several times. I was also lucky to have a number of amazing
Jewish friends and noticed many similarities within our cultures. Finally, Notting Hill was on my
way to school when we moved to London, so it was also something close to my heart and I saw
first-hand the discrimination against black people, in particular.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and
why?

One of my favourite characters is Ingrid. The strength and courage that she showed in helping
Helga’s family, when no one else would, is so inspirational. It is unimaginable to think about
what it must have taken to defy the law and society to do what is morally right. I would ask her
how she found the courage to stand up to a regime alone and why she showed such courage
and morality when so few did.
Many people talk about moral courage, but it is not always easy to do the right thing or to even
know what the right thing is. Sometimes, it is easiest to do nothing. Perhaps if more people
demonstrated such qualities, we would have more tolerance and acceptance for those around
us.

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

I have found LinkedIn to be particularly effective at sparking interesting debates around these
important issues.

amzn_assoc_ad_type = “banner”; amzn_assoc_marketplace = “amazon”; amzn_assoc_region = “US”; amzn_assoc_placement = “assoc_banner_placement_default”; amzn_assoc_campaigns = “audible”; amzn_assoc_banner_type = “category”; amzn_assoc_isresponsive = “true”; amzn_assoc_banner_id = “0S6C9RC4J0QCW7HD2PG2”; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = “authoranthony-20”; amzn_assoc_linkid = “54e48b08cb5048486fcc1cc628e64538”; //z-na.amazon-adsystem.com/widgets/q?ServiceVersion=20070822&Operation=GetScript&ID=OneJS&WS=1

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Just start to write because it is the hardest thing to get words on paper. Keep re-reading your
work and re-working your ideas and it will work out. You must also write from the heart and let it flow naturally, making sure that historical events are duly cited if they are to be included.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

Yes, I have another book planned and am extremely excited to share more details when the
time is right!

Interview with Author Rich Marcello

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I’ve been writing now for ten years. When I started, I had a goal to write ten books before all was said and done. Cenotaphs is my fifth novel and sixth book, so I still have a ways to go before I reach the goal, but I remain committed to getting there. Before I became a professional writer, I worked for a number of technology companies.

2) What inspired you to write your book?

I was interested in writing a book about platonic love between a man and  woman. In particular, I was interested in how that kind of love has the power to heal the deepest wounds, maybe even more so than other kinds of love. Not many written books are written on this topic, and I thought it was a fascinating one to explore.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I hope they experience the power of redemptive love.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

I tend to be interested in big topics and I think literary fiction, with its emphasis on characterization, is a great way to explore these topics. It’s given me the tools to write books on polarization in America, aging with meaning, the long term impacts of violence, and on being a good man. Plus, all my favorite writers like Walker Percy and Milan Kundera write literary fiction.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

I would sit down with both Ben and Samantha and ask them how they felt loving each other in such a non-traditional way, and why that kind of love allowed them to move forward with their lives separately and together.

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Facebook.  Many of my Facebook friends engage on a regular basis with me and my books.

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Just keep going. Learn as much as you can about your craft and remember good art doesn’t always find an audience right away. If you have a need to create, as I do, there’s nothing more powerful and generative emotionally than putting a piece out into the world.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I’m working on two novels now, The Means of Keeping, about the climate crisis, and In the Seat of the Eddas, a follow on to The Latecomers.

About the Author

Rich is the author of five novels, The Color of Home, The Big Wide Calm, The Beauty of the Fall, The Latecomers, and Cenotaphs, and the poetry collection, The Long Body That Connects Us All. He also teaches creative writing at Seven Bridges’ Writer Collaborative. Previously, he enjoyed a successful career as a technology executive, managing several multi-billion dollar businesses for Fortune 500 companies.

As anyone who has read Rich’s work can tell you, his books deal with life’s big questions: love, loss, creativity, community, self-discovery and forgiveness. His novels are rich with characters and ideas, crafted by a natural storyteller, with the eye and the ear of a poet. For Rich, writing and art making is about connection, or as he says, about making a difference to a least one other person in the world, something he has clearly achieved many times over, both as an artist, a mentor, and a teacher.

Rich lives in Massachusetts with his wife and Newfoundland Shaman. He is currently working on his sixth and seventh novels, The Means of Keeping and In the Seat of the Eddas, a follow-on to The Latecomers.

Interview with Author Natalie Hanson

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

For many years I concentrated on being a screenplay writer. I had mild success optioning scripts, selling scripts and being hired to write, but never felt the joy of seeing something I wrote on the big screen. Scripts are rarely considered a ‘finished product’. There’s always another producer who wants changes. So my angst for having a completed project led me to pursue writing novels. There is something very satisfying when you are truly done.

2) What inspired you to write your book?

I wanted to write a female character that can do anything a man can. Traditionally women are judged for making choices a man does every day. Who they can sleep with, how they speak, having children. I wanted to create a protagonist that was ashamed to be who she was.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

In all things, chaos prevails. So just accept it now. The more control you try to have over life the more you will be disappointed.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

In recent years I’ve had a number of folks who have given me the feedback “Your writing is so disturbing. Everyone is so evil!” And I always think “Really, I thought that was just Tuesday!” I guess I live in the dark places where most people just visit. For me, my creative work has always been on the gritty side.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

I’d be interested in asking Zalla about her life choices. One seemingly small choice can change your entire life. I’d love to explore how her life might have turned out differently had she zigged instead of zagged.

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership? Oh, this one’s a tough one. I will fully admit I am not good at social media. It’s a real skill that requires time and dedication. I strive to improve in the future.

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Your writing is going to suck, and it’s OK. It takes thousands of hours to start pumping out good material. So in the beginning, be open to feedback and adjust. Edit out your favorite thing from a story if it’s not working. Be prepared to do anything to make the material better.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

The Zalla series includes five novels. They are all complete and book 4 & 5 are being edited now. I wanted to get all the heavy lifting of writing out of the way so I’d have more time to devote to promotion and the logistics of self-publishing. I am looking forward to getting them all out there into the world!

Thread of Souls: Book II – Ash & Thunder by Scott and Ashley Roepel Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A deadly new threat to Soleia rises in the cover of a massive storm, and the Phantom Five find themselves questioning one another’s loyalty as they seek refuge and help within the empire’s capital in authors Scott and Ashley Roepel’s “Thread of Souls: Book II – Ash & Thunder”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

The adventuring group known as the Phantom Five journey to the empire’s capital to warn of the threat against it. But instead of a welcome reception, they find a city wrought with deception. The royal children are missing, murders happen overnight, and the group’s own loyalties are questioned. Worse, their one contact in the capital, Unol’s Shadow Guild, has marked her as a traitor. All the while, rumors spread of a great storm over Soleia hiding a monster within. And as their attention is divided in a world crumbling into chaos around them, Jade knows the clock is ticking on her visions. If she doesn’t make it to Oceala soon, everyone in her city will die.

The Review

A fantastic new chapter in this growing fantasy saga, the authors have brilliantly given readers a lengthy epic fantasy that balances intricate character development with big-time mythology. The protagonists of this series, the Phantom Five, once more take center stage, and their evolution throughout this narrative is engaging to say the least. It was fascinating to witness the twists and turns the authors took their heroes, from the noble Zok to Unole and Jade, and even took the time to give each protagonist their own chapters and time to explore their motivations clearly.

The mythos is what always drives me and my passion for epic fantasy series like this. I loved the inclusion of so many known supernatural creatures, but the created mythology that the authors put together of this new land and the world overall was fantastic to see come to life on the page. Imagery played a major role in this story, the writing doing an excellent job of crafting the narrative in such a way that the characters and world came to life in my mind.

The Verdict

A thrilling, haunting, and entertaining new chapter in this growing fantasy world, authors Scott and Ashley Roepel’s “Thread of Souls: Book II – Ash & Thunder” is a must-read fantasy book. The perfect second chapter of this growing universe, the twists and turns the author takes readers on, including the identity of the book’s latest threats, makes this story so engaging for fans of this genre, and a cliff-hanger ending will leave fans breathlessly awaiting the next chapter of the series. Public Display of Aggression (Mystic Rampage #2) by Hugh Fritz Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Two immortal genies who have only known magic tied to living beings must contend with a man who has guns that fire spells, a man who has risen from the dead, and a missing genie as they hunt a list of people in author Hugh Fritz’s novel, “Public Display of Aggression”, the second book in the Mystic Rampage series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Soleil and Flarence are immortal Genies who can bend the fundamental forces of the universe through willpower alone. For centuries, they have considered themselves the most formidable beings in the world, but some newcomers just might give them a run for their money.

Magic has always been limited to living things. Throughout his life, Soleil has never come across an object with supernatural capabilities. Now, a human has somehow constructed guns with the ability to fire spells. Genies are normally resistant to offensive magic, but Soleil knows from experience that the enchanted revolvers harm all creatures equally.

Resurrection is one of the few limitations to a Genie’s abilities. Not even magic should be able to bring a person back from death. Recently, though, Flarence saw a corpse not only rise but also fight. Endowed with incredible speed and strength, the revived man seeks revenge on his murderers.

To make matters worse, Darren (the third member of the Genie “family”) is still missing. He’s been lying low, biding his time, but hasn’t forgotten about Officer Tymbir, and has every intention of settling their score.

Darren, the revived corpse, and the man with the magic guns have a list of people to kill, and are eager to spill blood. With the help of Mohinaux and Claire, Soleil and Flarence rush to locate them, uncover the sources of their powers, and find a way to stop them.

This book is perfect for adults who want to get in touch with their inner child!

The Review

Author Hugh Fritz does it again! A fantastic blend of action and modern-day character interactions with magic and supernatural mayhem, this book perfectly balances mythology and character-driven narratives. The mature tone the author takes with his writing helps separate his work from other fantasy-driven narratives, while also crafting a story that allows for newcomers to enjoy it just as much as fans of the first book in this series.

It is the balance of character growth and mythology that really defines this narrative. The author has crafted a unique cast of characters, each with their own distinct voice and personality that draws the reader in. What is most interesting is their evolution throughout the narrative, as characters who enter the story in a terrifying manner can just as easily become the lynchpin to stopping an even bigger threat.

The Verdict

Action-packed, entertaining, and brilliantly written, author Hugh Fritz’s “Public Display of Aggression” is a must-read action and fantasy-thriller of 2021. The perfect read to escape reality and filled with twists and turns the reader won’t soon forget, fans of the series both old and new will be on the edge of their seat to check out this fantastic story. Murdered for Nothing by Gary Westphalen Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A gruesome series of murders in the late 80’s finds upstate New York in a frenzy in a fictionalized version of true events in author Gary Westphalen’s “Murdered for Nothing”.

The Synopsis

On a cold and snowy night in Upstate New York, two men walked into a little neighborhood bar. When they walked out a few minutes later, the three people inside had their heads caved in, and the place was on fire. In less than 48 hours, two more people in Rochester would be savagely tortured and murdered, and their homes also set ablaze. The five died in robberies that netted less than a hundred dollars. And that real-life crime spree is just the beginning.Set in the late 1980’s, Murdered For Nothing follows the criminals, the cops looking for them, the lawyer aching to represent them, and the media covering it all through a gruesome and twisted drama that includes egos, lies, suspense, the occasional touch of humor, and even a courtroom brawl that occurred in front of a dual trial involving two juries. Best of all, it unravels right in front of my camera. You see, I was the first television news photographer allowed to record a trial in New York State.Set in the late 1980’s, Murdered For Nothing is a fictionalized version of those real-life events that I witnessed first-hand. They have been percolating in my head for decades, and have bubbled to the surface in this page-turner that you won’t be able to put down.

The Review

This was a truly engaging and chilling crime thriller. What set this story apart from others within this genre was the fact that the crimes themselves were not some glamorous, Hollywood-style event that saw some big shootout with police during a bank heist. Instead, the story focused on the brutal reality of most crimes, which is that murder is far too often not just heartbreaking and painful for those left behind, but pointless as well. The author perfectly captures the raw emotions and vicious nature of the small-town crime that often gets overshadowed by the media, while also balancing this out with fast-paced storytelling and haunting use of imagery within the writing itself to bring these crimes and the lives of those involved to life.

What really stands out of course is the amazing character development within this novel. The author not only hones in on the mindset and personalities of the criminals, the police, and those involved in the case but even brings to life the small-town of Rochester itself, showing the townspeople and how these brutal crimes affected them. Balancing out this story of brutality with crimes such as this was the media sensation that the case became, highlighting our own nature as a society to become invested in and fascinated with the criminal mind and their acts.

The Verdict

A brilliant, enthralling, and haunting read, author Gary Westphalen’s “Murder for Nothing” is a fantastic and must-read crime thriller for the summer. Not only does the story itself draw the reader in, but the fact it’s a fictionalized narrative based on true events makes the story much more engaging, and will have readers clamoring to learn more about this case. The Unknown Man by Natalie Hanson Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

An FBI agent with a gift for sensing lies finds herself searching for two kidnapped twins and a suspect with little to no information in a race against time in author Natalie Hanson’s novel, “The Unknown Man”.

The Synopsis

It took just a tiny bit more matter than antimatter for the big bang to produce the entire universe. Born with an abnormality that manifests through her body, imbalance is something Zalla Bennbett understands. Her ability to sense out lies gives her an advantage on FBI investigations, but sixteen years in, both her marriage and career are on the rocks.

Zalla is assigned to work the kidnapping of an FBI informant’s young twins. With no evidence or leads, her suspect is deemed ‘The Unknown Man’. She’ll have to fight against her instincts to find the girls before time runs out.

The Review

A chilling and gripping tale, author Natalie Hanson has delivered a masterpiece thriller like no other. The author does a fantastic job of delivering suspense and drama on every page through perfect pacing and shocking narrative developments. The complex web of deceit and the twists and turns the author showcases in the narrative help bring out the terror that helps define the horror/thriller genre.

The novel is the perfect balance of character development and pacing, taking the time to introduce readers to this narrative’s characters and establish a bond between the reader and the characters. The revelations that are made throughout the novel and the identity of the villain who has brought a level of complexity and drama to the narrative make this story a real stand-out amongst the other new releases in this genre.
