Public Display of Aggression (Mystic Rampage #2) by Hugh Fritz Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Two immortal genies who have only known magic tied to living beings must contend with a man who has guns that fire spells, a man who has risen from the dead, and a missing genie as they hunt a list of people in author Hugh Fritz’s novel, “Public Display of Aggression”, the second book in the Mystic Rampage series.

The Synopsis

Soleil and Flarence are immortal Genies who can bend the fundamental forces of the universe through willpower alone. For centuries, they have considered themselves the most formidable beings in the world, but some newcomers just might give them a run for their money.

Magic has always been limited to living things. Throughout his life, Soleil has never come across an object with supernatural capabilities. Now, a human has somehow constructed guns with the ability to fire spells. Genies are normally resistant to offensive magic, but Soleil knows from experience that the enchanted revolvers harm all creatures equally.

Resurrection is one of the few limitations to a Genie’s abilities. Not even magic should be able to bring a person back from death. Recently, though, Flarence saw a corpse not only rise but also fight. Endowed with incredible speed and strength, the revived man seeks revenge on his murderers.

To make matters worse, Darren (the third member of the Genie “family”) is still missing. He’s been lying low, biding his time, but hasn’t forgotten about Officer Tymbir, and has every intention of settling their score.

Darren, the revived corpse, and the man with the magic guns have a list of people to kill, and are eager to spill blood. With the help of Mohinaux and Claire, Soleil and Flarence rush to locate them, uncover the sources of their powers, and find a way to stop them.

This book is perfect for adults who want to get in touch with their inner child!

The Review

Author Hugh Fritz does it again! A fantastic blend of action and modern-day character interactions with magic and supernatural mayhem, this book perfectly balances mythology and character-driven narratives. The mature tone the author takes with his writing helps separate his work from other fantasy-driven narratives, while also crafting a story that allows for newcomers to enjoy it just as much as fans of the first book in this series.

It is the balance of character growth and mythology that really defines this narrative. The author has crafted a unique cast of characters, each with their own distinct voice and personality that draws the reader in. What is most interesting is their evolution throughout the narrative, as characters who enter the story in a terrifying manner can just as easily become the lynchpin to stopping an even bigger threat.

The Verdict

Action-packed, entertaining, and brilliantly written, author Hugh Fritz’s “Public Display of Aggression” is a must-read action and fantasy-thriller of 2021. The perfect read to escape reality and filled with twists and turns the reader won’t soon forget, fans of the series both old and new will be on the edge of their seat to check out this fantastic story. Be sure to grab your copy today!

Interview with Author Hugh Fritz

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

Writing began as a way to meet people. There was a group of kids in high school who met to share short stories, poems, and songs. I joined them and brought scripts using everyone in the group as a character. After high school I kept writing on my own, but switched to narratives.

What inspired you to write your book?

The idea for this story came after reading the Crucible for an English class. It sounds strange to say now, but that was the inspiration. The Mystic Rampage series started as an alternate history about a secret war between witches and genies. It went through a lot of changes because I was worried that if I ever tried to publish it the readers would be troubled by the lack of historical accuracy. It was also had a lot in common with the Crucible so another concern was fans of classic literature feeling I had disgraced a treasured piece. This might have been an overreaction on my part, but I’m satisfied with the final product even if it is completely different than the original concept.

What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I would like readers to focus on the message of teamwork. When the Genies work together they’re capable of saving lives but when they turn against one another it leads to unnecessary casualties and nobody gets what they want.

What drew you into this particular genre?

Selecting a genre has been a struggle. It was fun basing a story on the Crucible but I was having trouble writing characters in that time period so I made it more modern. When I decided to have it take place in Chicago and introduced the gang I had every intention of making it a horror novel, but I became uncomfortable with the level of gore I was putting into some of the murder scenes. I cut back on the bloodshed and came up with the book I have now. I feel like I’m stumbling toward urban fantasy, but Made to Be Broken still has traces of the horror story I once wanted it to be, so in the end the publisher felt it was best to classify it as a fantasy thriller.

If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

I’d like to ask Atalissa if she regrets not listening to her parents and if she would still marry Darren, knowing how their lives would play out. I made it clear that Darren is willing to do anything for Tyrell, but I don’t feel like I focused on Atalissa enough and didn’t establish whether or not her feelings for her family were as strong.

What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

I have to say Facebook because it’s the one I’ve used most often. I have accounts on a few social media sites but don’t spend a lot of time on any of them so I don’t have much insight about which one is the best to use.

What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Don’t write a novel as a first project. Writing short stories in different genres is a great way to discover what kind of author you are and provides insight about your strengths and weaknesses. That personal awareness will help plan a longer piece. I’m better at describing scenery and actions than dialogue, so when I get stuck I’ll write a few chapters without anybody speaking. Once I have all my thoughts on paper, I’ll go back and figure out what the characters should say. Some people might prefer the opposite, and write a few chapters with just dialogue before going back to describe where the scene took place and what the characters were doing. Whatever the style, I feel like it’s better to get a lot done quickly and then go back to tweak it than to try doing everything at once.

What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I have a story that I edit whenever I need a break from Mystic Rampage. It takes place in an imaginary kingdom and follows a dragon, a knight, and a farmer. A sorcerer casts a spell on each of them and they need to help one another to live with their curses, and possibly break them. Maybe I’ll see about getting that one published someday.

Made To Be Broken by Hugh Fritz Review

Three men must work outside of their comfort zones and face the world in new and unimaginable ways in author Hugh Fritz’s novel, “Made To Be Broken”.

The Synopsis

Flarence knows that Genies are supposed to help their masters by granting wishes, but he’s never been comfortable taking orders. To him, pummeling bad guys with magically enhanced weaponry feels like a much better way to use his powers.

Darren is a gangster who wants to leave his reckless life behind so he can focus on providing for his family. Unfortunately, there are people in the neighborhood who won’t let him move on.

Soleil is a humble man who tries to lead a passive lifestyle. In times of peace or times of war, he can be found cleaning his cafe or singing along with rock-’n’-roll tunes while tending to his houseplants.

Darren, Soleil, and Flarence will have to work together and step outside their comfort zones when a rogue Genie and a hot-headed police officer threaten the lives of their loved ones. Flarence will be challenged to work with a criminal, Soleil will be forced to leave his sanctuary and act to help his friends, and Darren will face the possibility that being a gentle and caring family man may not be an option for him.

The Review

A fantastic blend of action and adventure with fantasy, mythology and character-driven narrative. The author has done an excellent job of creating a diverse cast of characters from different backgrounds and personalities, creating amazing character interactions and crafting plot twists that readers won’t see coming.

Exploring each of the men’s backgrounds, personalities and views on life, the author does an excellent job of exploring the affect power has on each individual person, and how that power either corrupts or helps those who end up wielding it. Giving readers a new take on the mythology surrounding Genies in general and how magic would work in our gritty, real-world drama and adventure, this novel instantly draws the reader into this growing narrative and keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, anticipating the next chapter of this growing story.

The Verdict

A smash hit in the action/adventure and fantasy genres! Fantastic world building mixed with relatable, realistic yet magical character arcs that readers will instantly gravitate towards makes “Made to Be Broken” by Hugh Fritz an excellent first novel in the growing “Mystic Rampage” series, and a must own novel of 2019. It is truly gritty, violent yet powerfully integrating of the fantasy genre into our world, making for one of the more adult and unique reads of the 2019 fantasy genre. Pick up your copies today!
