Interview with Author Jennifer Landels

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

I have always written.  My oldest extant work is an illustrated retelling of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ from when I was four.  There aren’t many words, but from the pictures done entirely in thick red marker I gather it was some sort of feminist take.  I wrote a lot of stories throughout grade school, and even started a novel (which I’m hoping has been lost).  I still had the urge to write fiction in university but lacked the time.  I dribbled out a few abandoned starts during my time fronting rock bands in the UK and Vancouver, but my creative energy was mostly used up with songwriting, and after that creating human life.  It wasn’t until my youngest daughters were about three that I found the Hour Stories workshop by Dale Adams Segal and fiction started to flow again.

2) What inspired you to write your book?

For the full series of sword fighter portraits, please visit http://www.markfeenstra.com/swordplay

My family.  Motherhood, and the complex relationships between mothers and daughters, are the heart of the Allaigna’s Song Trilogy, and particularly of the first book, Overture.  The first line of the book “If you walk down the grand staircase of Castle Osthegn you will see a family portrait,” is pretty much exactly how I orignally wrote it.  I had this image of the portrait and the tension between mother, daughter, father, and brother visible in the strokes of the painting.  The rest came from there.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I don’t really have a message for readers.  My characters take on a life of their own, and I write for them.  I just hope that readers enjoy visiting my characters’ lives as much as I do, and find moments that resonate with them.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

It’s an easy genre for me to write.  My abandoned PhD thesis was on Arthurian Romance, which is essentially high fantasy, and I read a LOT of fantasy in my youth.  Ironically, I very seldom pick up a fantasy novel now, and my current work-in-progress is historical fiction.  Perhaps when I’ve released the final Allaigna novel I will be able to read fantasy again.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them and why?

That’s an easy one — it would be Irdaign, Allaigna’s grandmother.  I’d be tempted to ask her about the future, but I know she wouldn’t answer, so instead I’d pick her brains about herbal lore and animal husbandry.  And maybe ask her to sing a song.

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

I suppose Facebook, though I find its constant changing of algorithms and interfaces incredibly annoying.  I occasionally get bouts of Twitter use, but its a bit like a firehose.  I’ve resisted Instagram until recently because of their insistence on posting from a phone, but I’ve found a workaround, so we’ll see how that goes.  You can find me on all three platforms as @jmlandels.

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

Divide your workday into three parts: reading, writing, and marketing.  By workday, I mean the amount of time you devote to your writing career, whether that’s eight hours a day or two hours a week.  Try to do at least something in each of these areas every week.  Reading is important because it trains your brain to write well. Read good writing and bad writing, and writing both inside and outside your genre.  You’ll learn something from all of these. Write, even if it’s bad writing; and keep writing because it’s like a muscle you need to train. Be prepared to discard a lot of what you’ve written.  That’s okay — it’s practice.  And marketing — ugh.  Most writers hate it, but it’s a necessary evil.  If you’re just starting out writing it’s still not to early to start building your social network.  Work on relationships and actually being social on social media.  That way, when you have a book ready to release to the world you’ll have friends who’ll help you spread the word.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I’m editing like mad to release Allaigna’s Song: Chorale in late 2021.  I’ve also been releasing bits of my historical novel The Shepherdess, about a shepherdess-turned-spy in 17th century France, in installments in Pulp Literature magazine.  You’ll find the most recent adventure of Toinette in PL issue 28, Autumn 2020, just released now!  And when I’m not writing or editing, I’m riding horses, swinging swords, and teaching mounted combat in person and online with my new school, Academie Cavallo (academiecavallo.ca).  Do I do too much?  Yes, probably.

Interview with Author Anthony Avina

1) Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you get into writing?

From a young age, say around 12, I always thought writing is what I would end up doing. And it did start that way, writing scripts, adaptations, mostly, while crewing on film and television productions. While I was doing this, I started making short films on the side, and on the strength of one of these, an adaptation of Alistair MacLeod’s short story, ‘The Lost Salt Gift of Blood’, I began directing commercials. From there, I moved into directing and producing extreme sports. It wasn’t until 2012 that I came back to writing, however, this time, instead of scripts, it was narrative fiction and essays.

Advertisements

2) What inspired you to write your book?

Life changed. And on a very specific day, at 4 am, how I wrote changed. I had been a good writer – paid to write, but this was different. And I began to explore that. This was in 2010. By 2012, I realized, okay, this is it now, this me. And so I started to work on the book, The Fiddler in the Night, but then, a different story idea would come to me, and I’d explore that. And so, that’s what happened, I’d work on the novel, leave it, and write a short story or two, then go back to the novel. While this was happening, one of these other story ideas turned out to be bigger than a short story, and so there I was – writing short stories and two novels. Probably not the most expedient way to write a book, but then again, here I am now, eight years later, with three books done, which to me, I consider to be a trilogy, The Real and the ImaginedThe Fiddler in the Night being Book Two. Torrents of Our Time, the collection of stories, Book One.

3) What theme or message do you hope readers will take away from your book?

I guess, keep moving forward. Not always easy, and at times, not always possible. But it is the goal. That, and embrace change, when it comes. Listen to it, which often means, finding a deeper level of faith and trust in yourself.

4) What drew you into this particular genre?

I’ve never thought in terms of genre as a writer. I just write, and try to be a better writer each day. I suppose though, the books I gravitated to as a reader, have influenced me, to a degree, in terms of how I write. Or perhaps, what I write. Although, I side more with Toni Morrison on that question, in that, I think reading, although it can be an influence on a writer, that influence is greatly overestimated.

5) If you could sit down with any character in your book, what would you ask them, and why?

Oh man …. idk? Rachael, I guess. And I’d ask her – or rather, say to her, please don’t hold it against me that I placed you in such a strange place. Fictional characters that you write – it’s a mystery, really, how they become what they become. And why. But I would certainly want these conversations to be me asking questions, and not the other way around.

6) What social media site has been the most helpful in developing your readership?

Helpful? I’m a social media … if not failure, call it – just not good at it. I’d like to get to the place where I don’t bring the one to the other.

7) What advice would you give to aspiring or just starting authors out there?

One, there are no absolutes. Nothing is true. And this, especially when you’re young, is so important to understand. Two, it’s going to take a long time, and I don’t care who you are, it just is. And so my advice would be to work somewhere and make as much bank as you can, as quickly as you can, while you first explore writing, and then – take off. Travel, or find a cheap place to live somewhere you love, and go at it, hard. But whatever you do, and this applies only to fiction writers, and those wanting to make a living from fiction, do not give that money to an institution, of any kind. Just don’t. Stay out on your own, and go at it like that … it’s the truest way of getting there, IMO.

8) What does the future hold in store for you? Any new books/projects on the horizon?

I’m finishing up now, Book Three, tentatively called Isidore, of the trilogy The Real and the Imagined. It’s scheduled to come out in the Spring of 2021. After that, it depends if the world gets back to where it once was, and travel becomes a thing again. If so, with these three books out, I think a bookstores and beaches tour could be in order. Perhaps, stop in and visit with some other artists and writers along the way.

Thankfully In Love: A Thanksgiving Anthology Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Four authors highlight the struggles of four women who have endured heartbreak and complicated pasts, and who must find a way to open their hearts again in the breakout Thanksgiving holiday anthology, “Thankfully in Love”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Four USA Today bestselling romance authors come together for Thanksgiving, telling the stories of four woman who have not had the best experiences with the men they have dated in their pasts. With the help of family and loved ones this holiday season, can they learn to open their hearts one more time? If they can dare to make the leap, they could find themselves finally, thankfully in love…

There’s no place like home, especially during Thanksgiving. After spending ten years as an officer and analyst with a special division in a federal cyber-investigation, Tripp Atsilla is on the brink of burnout. Then he meets Parker Rutledge. Two years ago she changed her name and moved to a small town, hoping to leave the damage her ex-husband caused behind. Someone’s found her; someone who wants to make her pay for her ex-husband’s crimes. But can she trust Tripp? Can she trust anyone?

Miranda Cox isn’t looking forward to heading home for Thanksgiving. She’d raved to everyone that Matthew was the one; now she has yet another failed relationship under her belt. Despite working as a translator in Ottawa, and loving travelling abroad, she’s thirty-four and still single. When Miranda arrives at Union Station in Toronto, she’s surprised to see Taz, her childhood friend. Years earlier, they’d drifted apart. Miranda was so hurt over the loss of their friendship. She’s also shocked to learn that he’s divorced. Miranda finds herself inviting him and his sick mother for Thanksgiving dinner at her parents’ place. It is finally their time?

Chef Drew Barnett has been hired to create the perfect Thanksgiving for a potential restaurant investor, but a power outage has him scrambling to find a working kitchen. Jilted bride and food critic Claire Rothchild is pet-sitting a friend’s St. Bernard named Snowflake. She wants to hibernate for the holidays, but it turns out the guest house she’s staying in has power when the main house does not. Feeling uncomfortable for invading the privacy of his potential investor’s guest, Drew doesn’t know what to make of a food critic in his kitchen, just as Claire doesn’t know how to stop interfering with his dishes and passing tidbits to a mooching pooch. Is this a recipe for a Dog-Gone Holiday? Or for love?

Born with a degenerative eye disease, photographer Kelsey Thomas knows two things: she will be legally blind within five years and her family wants to see her married and settled first. Then Kelsey’s boyfriend breaks up with her one week before she planned to introduce him to her family at her grandmother’s island commitment ceremony. At the resort bar, she meets Dr. Noah Lawson. He spends his life inside his lab developing cutting-edge techniques to slow the progression of vision loss. When he’s offered funding with strings—save the eyesight of the granddaughter of a wealthy investor—he’s reluctant to agree. Noah is smitten by Kelsey—so much so that he agrees to be her fake wedding date for the Thanksgiving holidays. Too late, he realizes her connection to his potential investor. Is this a set-up? Or fate?

The Review

This was a heartwarming, emotional, and entertaining read. Each author did an amazing job of blending their individual tales into the overall theme and setting of the anthology, while still retaining originality and great character development in their narratives.

The thing that stood out to me as a reader and an author was the way each author was able to bring to the table their own unique spin on the theme by incorporating different genres into the narratives. The first story of this anthology becomes a mystery-thriller with a romantic twist, and then the next becomes a heartwarming tale of nostalgia, and two people who believed their love for one another was unrequited. It was a fun and excellent way of keeping each author’s voice distinct and keeping the stories from blurring between one another.

The Verdict

Passionate, emotionally-driven, and brilliantly executed, “Thankfully In Love” is a must-read anthology this holiday season. An evenly-paced collection that captures the closeness and family-driven holidays, each story brings about tales of hope, passion, and brewing romances that reignite the heart and drive us all forever onward. If you are a fan of holiday romance stories, then don’t miss out on this amazing anthology today!

A non-stop flight from Honolulu to Chicago. A quick stop at the airport bookstore and Cari Lynn Webb discovered her love for romance. She cannot recall the book she bought, but she does remember finishing it somewhere over California, feeling pleased the murderer had been arrested (justice had prevailed). But frustration reigned as Cari searched for a hidden chapter or missed epilogue that would show the heroine and the FBI agent she’d fallen in love with living their happily-ever-after. (Surely love conquered all.) Except not in that particular book. Another trip to the bookstore in her grandparents’ home town and Cari discovered an entire section of books dedicated to the happily-ever-after. There she found Kathleen Woodiwiss, Judith McNaught and then Nora Robert … and she became a life-long romance reader.

Cari’s passion for reading had not dimmed years later when she found herself newly married and inside another bookstore during her lunch break. But the shelves of happily-ever-afters surrounding her couldn’t stem her frustration at not being able to find a new historical romance (Amazon wasn’t the household name it would become). So like any dedicated reader, Cari drove back to work, opened a word document and began to write the historical she wanted to read. Months later, she printed the manuscript, presented it to her husband and asked if she should pursue acting or continue writing. With her husband’s full support, she continued writing… and now she feeds her passion for romance with a stack of to-be read paperbacks in her nightstand, multiple downloads on her kindle and her own stories.

Cari believes in the power of love simply because she’d grown up surrounded by true love. She remembers her grandparents holding hands when she visited them as a kindergartner and still holding hands when her grandmother whispered her final goodbyes to her grandfather after 70 years together. Cari’s parents have been married over 50 years. And Cari is blessed to have married her own hero. She will be the first to tell you that true love isn’t always sweet and perfect, it can be challenging, complicated and risky. But in the end, there is nothing more worth fighting for.

Wishing all of you, your very own happily-ever-after…

Possessed President by Amo Sulaiman Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

Two outsiders must traverse a self-destructive America in order to rescue a Possessed President in author Amo Sulaiman’s “Possessed President”.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

Full of thought-provoking symbolism leavened with both crazy antics and danger, Possessed President, Resman—the responsibility man—and his bodyguard Osray.

The pair descend from the celestial city of Atlantis to travel across America, teaching its citizens to take responsibility for not only their own actions, but the effects their actions have on everything around them.

Their goal: confront the president of the United States about the federalist policies that are driving America and Americans to self-destruction.

Resman quickly develops a following, and soon “Resmanism” is sweeping across America and around the world.

The Review

A truly unique blend of political drama, science fiction, and fantasy, “Possessed President” is a powerful read that explores the divisiveness and lack of responsibility that has plagued the United States for years. Exploring the impact of policies similar to the ones we see being implemented now in the United States, the novel fuses this political unrest with a one-of-a-kind sci-fi epic storyline.

The use of beings from another world as the protagonists and bringing an outsider’s perspective to the situation in the United States was an inspired choice. The inclusion of mythological settings like Atlantis, as well as the unique chemistry and growing relationship between Earl-Dylan and Osray, made the story shine and the pace smooth.

The Verdict

Action-packed, thoughtful and creative, “Possessed President” by Amo Sulaiman is a must-read sci-fi and political drama. The pacing of the novel is lengthy yet engaging throughout and makes for the perfect read for the upcoming U.S. Election looming over us all and the deep, philosophical, and moral questions the narrative poses to the reader. If you haven’t yet, be sure to grab your copy today!

Scarlet Reign: Call For Independence by R.D. Crist Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman finds herself embroiled in a gritty, magical war and surrounded by a sisterhood she doesn’t know if she can trust in author R.D. Crist’s “Scarlet Reign: Call For independence”, the second in the Scarlet Reign series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

War is brewing amongst the orders, and the Sisterhood has lost its infamous protector to the dark witch. Tough decisions are on the horizon for Natalie, the renowned teen leader who saved the Sisterhood, and is expected by some to do so again. The council, however, bears no respect for Natalie’s opinion in choosing a side, or declaring independence: a state that requires more than she is willing to sacrifice.

Meanwhile, old flames and foes vie for Natalie’s attention as she expresses desires to leave the order altogether. Natalie will need all that she has learned, her natural talents, and more, including new gifts of light bequeathed to her by her mentor. But all will be for naught if she cannot learn to materialize her powers in time. Will she move on from her sisters in what will be seen as an act of betrayal, or will she stay and fight?

The Review

A fantastic sequel to an already amazing fantasy series, this YA adventure takes place a couple of years after the shocking first book in the developing fantasy series. Highlighting the various politics and structural struggles that the Coalition (or group of various witches and covens), has, the story sees protagonist Natalie facing new struggles.

The first half of the novel takes readers right into the action, as another coven attacks ruthlessly Natalie and her sisters, forcing Natalie to fight to tap into her full power set. The battle leaves Natalie with several losses, revelations, and questions that need answers. Later the sisterhood is forced to compete in a competition of battles in an effort to gain independence from the Coalition altogether, in an effort to avoid all-out war.

The author really does an amazing job of weaving personal character growth for characters like Natalie with a larger overall plot that grows the evolving mythology of this fantasy world. Capturing the tone and imagery that makes the YA genre stand out from other genres, this novel does a great job of setting up future installments in the series.

The Verdict

Action-packed, emotional, and evenly paced, author R.D. Crist’s “Scarlet Reign: Call For Independence” is a must-read YA Fantasy. The protagonist is relatable, the mythology layered and complex, and the book ends on another shocking cliffhanger that will have major implications for the rest of the series. This is a read that is not to be missed, so be sure to grab your copy today!

Taya is a Finnish-American author, writing contemporary fiction and dystopian sci-fi. After living, working, and traveling in America for seven years, she now lives in Finland with her partner-in-everything Chris, their dog Seamus, three bunny-boys (Ronin, Baby, and Loki), and her horse of a lifetime, Arabella.

Taya’s restless feet have taken her all over Finland, the United Kingdom, and North America. Her new dystopian series “Unchipped” is inspired by the real-life characters she’s met on her travels. The return of heroes like Bart Allen and Superboy, aka Connor Kent, was amazing to see unfold, and seeing Tim Drake take on a leadership role was amazing to see as well. Incredibly written, this is a must-read for longtime DC Comics fans.

Allaigna’s Song: Overture (Allaigna’s Song #1) by J.M. Landels Review

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review. All opinions are my own.

A young woman with a fascinating yet deadly power must decide what her place in the nations of Ilmar and what kind of person she wants to be in author J.M. Landels’ “Allaigna’s Song: Overture”, the first in the Allaigna’s Song series.

Advertisements

The Synopsis

You can’t hide from magic when it’s in your blood …

When Allaigna was seven she almost sang her baby brother to sleep — forever. She may be heir to neither her mother’s titles nor her secrets, but she has inherited her grandmother’s dangerous talent for singing music into magic. As her education proceeds from nursery to weapons ground to the rank of royal page, it becomes increasingly hard to keep her heritage and abilities hidden.

Secrets, it seems, are stock-in-trade for her family, and as Allaigna works to keep her own, she uncovers two that will affect both her life and the unstable peace of the Ilmar nations. One is the fate of her grandmother, who married a prince, turning the gift of the Sight into a double-edged weapon of state. The other is the truth behind her mother’s two-week disappearance following an ambush by outlaws en route to her wedding.

As she discovers who she is, Allaigna must decide what to become: the skilled courtier her mother wants her to be, the political chess piece her father bargained on, or the hero her grandmother foresaw.

Allaigna’s Song: Overture is a love story, a family saga, and a coming-of-age novel that braids together the stories of daughter, mother, and grandmother into a rich and deftly woven narrative.

Readers are saying

“Beautiful writing and gripping storytelling throughout.”

“Allaigna, Lauresa, and Irdaign are tough, flawed, and appealing heroines.”

“Great tension, big world, perfect pacing, intriguing politics and lovely magic.”

“Magically unputdownable!”

The Review

This was a truly fascinating read. Immediately what stands out is how the author’s tale takes readers into an already established world from author Scott Fitzgerald Gray, set within the nations of Ilmar within the larger world of the Endlands. However, despite the author’s deep dive into this richly established fantasy world, this original story stands out on its own feet.

The core of this story is the amazing character development of three generations of women. Between protagonist Allaigna, her mother Lauresa, and her grandmother, the characters showcase a powerful, women-driven narrative that becomes the foundation of this new chapter in the fantasy realm. A healthy blend of magic, adventure and emotional storytelling set against the backdrop of family and political drama allow this story to be elevated to all new heights as well.

The Verdict

Powerfully written and lengthy yet engaging throughout the entirety of the novel, author J.M. Landels’ “Allaigna’s Song: Overture” is a must-read epic fantasy. The story is entertaining and driven by strong emotions, allowing the reader to become invested in the characters throughout this tale. By the book’s end, an open-ended final chapter allows readers to hang on the author’s every word and promises a strong sequel in the process. If you haven’t yet be sure to grab your copy of this fascinating book today.
