I must admit, I am a comic book nerd. I love Science Fiction and Horror, but I have a special place in my heart for superheroes and the stories they weave. For years, I grew up watching the cheesy antics of past Batman movies, but in the recent years, the dark tale of Christopher Nolan’s Batman movies, Sony’s Spider-Man trilogy, and the recent adventure of Ryan Reynolds Green Lantern, (which, despite critics depictions, I loved, and thought was amazing story wise and visually). However, one of the most amazing things in recent years has been the slew of movies released by Marvel Studios. Beginning with Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk back in 2008, Marvel began a four year journey to bring together a group of heroes, from Iron Man and Hulk to Captain America and Thor, that lead to this years most successful and amazing film of all time: Marvel’s The Avengers.
The Avengers tells the tale of a group of heroes, brought together when Loki, Thor’s brother and the god of Mischief, comes to Earth with unimaginable power, and threatens to unleash an army upon the world. The heroes, made up of a super soldier, a rage monster, a thunder god, two assassins, the leader of a counter-terrorism agency, and a CEO with a suit of armor, clash with their various personalities, but must find a way to come together in order to save the world.
Now, while this sounds like a basic superhero plot, the story telling is quite unique. Not only is this the first time this many superheroes have graced the screen together, but the unique visual styles, combined with the rich tapestry of actors makes this a must see movie. Led by director Joss Whedon, (Creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Dollhouse, Firefly, and Serenity), this is the first movie I’ve seen in ages where I love every single actor in the film. The action is heart-pounding, and the way Marvel has arranged for their films to intersect has helped me form an outline for my own work, helping me to see how to rightfully blend certain stories together. That is why my current inspiration is Marvel’s The Avengers.
P.S. If you go see the film, make sure to stay through all the credits for two bonus scenes!
