Creative Inspirations #2: Showtime’s Californication

The perfect blend of drama, comedy, and in-depth look into the life of a sex-addicted writer, Showtime’s Californication has been bringing fourth its unique edginess to Sunday nights. Starring David Duchovny as Hank Moody, a New York born writer who moves to Los Angeles to be closer to his ex-wife and his daughter, the show’s fifth season premiered last night, closing out Showtime’s epic Sunday nights. Watching this show, I can automatically feel my creativeness flow as I watch the characters I have come to know and love develop more. As part of the Showtime format, each character is deeply flawed, and far from perfect or even a hero. But much like Dexter Morgan or Weed’s Nancy Botwin, despite their cruel natures or life-defeating choices, fans and viewers of the show cannot help but like the driving force of Hank Moody, and hope above all that he can rise above his sex-crazed mindset in order to win his daughter’s heart and maybe even find true love again. Showtime knows how to pick them, and Californication manages to capture the rich culture of California while showcasing a great cast of character development.
